The explanation of His word: وَمَا تَأْتِيهِمْ مِنْ آيَةٍ مِنْ آيَاتِ رَبِّهِمْ إِلا كَانُوا عَنْهَا مُعْرِضِينَ (4) (And there comes not to them any sign from the signs of their Lord but that they turn away from it) (4).
Abū Jaʿfar said: He, exalted be His remembrance, says: And there comes to these unbelievers, who set up idols and gods as equals to their Lord, "no sign from the signs of their Lord," that is to say: no proof and no sign and no indication from the proofs of their Lord, and His indications and His signs concerning His oneness, and concerning the truthfulness of your prophethood, O Muḥammad, and the truth of what you have brought them from Me, "but that they turn away from it," that is to say: but that they turn away from it, namely from the sign, and they refuse to accept it and to acknowledge what it confirmed in truth and what it indicated as valid, out of ignorance toward Allah on their part, and out of being deluded by His forbearance toward them.
