The explanation of His saying: فَقَدْ كَذَّبُوا بِالْحَقِّ لَمَّا جَاءَهُمْ فَسَوْفَ يَأْتِيهِمْ أَنْبَاءُ مَا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ ("Indeed, they have denied the truth when it came to them; therefore the tidings of that which they used to mock will come to them.") (5)
Abū Jaʿfar said: He, exalted is His mention, says: these who set up others as equals to Allah have denied the truth when it came to them. And that "truth" is Muḥammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace (18); they denied him and rejected his prophethood when he came to them. Allah said to them, threatening them on account of their denial of him and their rejection of his prophethood: there will come to those who deny you, O Muḥammad, among your people and others = "anbāʾu mā kānū bihi yastahziʾūn" (the tidings of that which they used to mock). He says: there will come to them the tidings of their mockery of that which they used to mock of My signs and My proofs which I had given them. (19) Then He fulfilled His threat against them when they persisted in their misguidance and were arrogant toward their Lord; and He killed them on the day of Badr with the sword.
