And the worldly life is not but amusement and diversion; but the home of the Hereafter is best for those who fear Allah, so will you not reason?

The explanation of His statement: وَمَا الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا إِلا لَعِبٌ وَلَهْوٌ وَلَلدَّارُ الآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لِلَّذِينَ يَتَّقُونَ أَفَلا تَعْقِلُونَ (32) ("And the worldly life is nothing but play and amusement, and the abode of the Hereafter is better for those who are God-fearing. Do you then not understand?") (6:32).
Abū Jaʿfar said: And this is a refutation by Allah, the Exalted whose praise is sublime, of these disbelievers (kuffār) who deny the resurrection after death, in their saying: إِنْ هِيَ إِلا حَيَاتُنَا الدُّنْيَا وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَبْعُوثِينَ [sūra al-Anʿām: 29] ("There is nothing but our worldly life, and we shall not be resurrected").
The Exalted, whose praise is sublime, says, refuting them concerning what they put forward: "the worldly life is nothing," O people, "but play and amusement." He says: whoever pursues the pleasures of the life that has been brought near to you and that has been brought close in this abode of yours, and its delight and its joy therein, and whoever amuses himself with it and vies for it, he is in nothing but play and amusement, for it vanishes after a short while from the one who enjoys it and amuses himself in its pleasures, or the days assail him with their calamities and their vicissitudes, and make it bitter and turbid for him — like the playing, amusing man whose amusement and play swiftly vanish, and then make him feel remorse and leave him with grief. He says: do not let yourselves be deceived, O people, by it, for whoever lets himself be deceived by it comes to remorse after a short while — "and the abode of the Hereafter is better for those who are God-fearing." He says: the performance of obedience to Him and the preparation for the abode of the Hereafter with the righteous deeds whose benefits remain for those who perform them and whose joy for their dwellers endures therein — that is better than the abode that soon perishes, in which no joy remains for those who labor in it and no favor endures — "for those who are God-fearing." He says: for those who fear Allah and therefore guard themselves before Him through obedience to Him and the avoidance of acts of disobedience to Him, and the hastening toward His good pleasure — "Do you then not understand?" He says: do these who deny the resurrection then not understand the truth of what We inform them, namely that the worldly life is play and amusement, while they see how one of them is snatched away, and who perishes and dies, and who is struck by calamities, overtaken by adversity, and afflicted by misfortune? In that there is, for whoever has reason, an admonition and a deterrent from relying upon it and enslaving the soul to it — and a clear proof that it has a Manager and Disposer, to whom it is incumbent upon the creatures to devote worship purely, without assigning anything other than Him as a partner.
