Tabari

Tafseer of The Cattle · Al-An'aam · 6:22

وَيَوْمَ نَحْشُرُهُمْ جَمِيعًۭا ثُمَّ نَقُولُ لِلَّذِينَ أَشْرَكُوٓا۟ أَيْنَ شُرَكَآؤُكُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ كُنتُمْ تَزْعُمُونَ

And [mention, O Muhammad], the Day We will gather them all together; then We will say to those who associated others with Allah, "Where are your 'partners' that you used to claim [with Him]?"

    The explanation of His word: وَيَوْمَ نَحْشُرُهُمْ جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ نَقُولُ لِلَّذِينَ أَشْرَكُوا أَيْنَ شُرَكَاؤُكُمُ الَّذِينَ كُنْتُمْ تَزْعُمُونَ (22) ("And on the Day when We gather them all together, then We say to those who ascribed partners: Where are your partners whom you used to claim?")

    Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: Indeed, these who fabricate lies against Allah and who deny His signs shall not succeed today, in this worldly life, nor on the Day when We gather them all together — He means: nor in the Hereafter.

    So in the wording there is an omitted portion, whereby, through the mention of what is visible, one is sufficed regarding what has been omitted.

    * * *

    The explanation of the words is: Indeed, the wrongdoers shall not succeed, today, in this worldly life, "and on the Day when We gather them all together," so that His word "and on the Day when We gather them" is referred back to what is intended in the wording. For even though it is omitted, it is as though present within it, owing to the listeners' knowledge of its meaning = "then We say to those who ascribed partners: Where are your partners," He says: then We say, when We gather these who fabricated lies against Allah by claiming for Him a partner in His dominion, and who denied His signs and His messengers — when We gather them all together on the Day of Resurrection = "Where are your partners whom you used to claim" that they were for you gods besides Allah, out of fabrication and lying, and whom you used to invoke besides Him as lords? Then bring them forth, if you are truthful!
