The explanation of the statement of the Exalted: إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُحَادُّونَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ أُولَئِكَ فِي الأَذَلِّينَ (58:20) (Indeed, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, these are among the most abased.)

The Exalted, whose praise is sublime, says: Indeed, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger concerning His limits and concerning the obligations He has imposed upon them, and who are therefore hostile to Him. And in accordance with what we have said about this, the exegetes (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.

    * Mention of those who said that:

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: ( إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُحَادُّونَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ ) (Indeed, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger) he says: they are hostile to Allah and His Messenger.

Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, with something similar.

Muhammad ibn ʿUmar related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Hārith related to me, saying: al-Hasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīh, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning his statement: ( يُحَادُّونَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ ) (they oppose Allah and His Messenger) he said: they are hostile, they dispute in opposition.

And His statement: ( أُولَئِكَ فِي الأذَلِّينَ ) (these are among the most abased) the Exalted, whose praise is sublime, says: These who oppose Allah and His Messenger are among the people of abasement, for victory belongs to Allah and His Messenger.
