His word: يُولِجُ اللَّيْلَ فِي النَّهَارِ (He causes the night to pass into the day) — by His word يُولِجُ اللَّيْلَ فِي النَّهَارِ He means: He adds that which is taken away from the hours of the night to the day and makes it an increase in its hours; وَيُولِجُ النَّهَارَ فِي اللَّيْلِ (and He causes the day to pass into the night) — He says: and He adds that which is taken away from the hours of the day to the night and makes it an increase in the hours of the night.
And in accordance with what we have said about this, the scholars of exegesis spoke.
We have already mentioned the transmission of what they said about that in what preceded of this our book, except that in this place we mention some matters that we did not mention there, if Allah, the Exalted, wills.
Hannād ibn al-Sarī related to us, saying: Abū al-Aḥwaṣ related to us, on the authority of Simāk, on the authority of ʿIkrima, concerning His word: يُولِجُ اللَّيْلَ فِي النَّهَارِ وَيُولِجُ النَّهَارَ فِي اللَّيْلِ — he said: the shortening of this one in the length of that one, and the length of this one in the shortening of that one.
Ibn Bashshār related to us, saying: Muʾammal related to us, saying: Sufyān related to us, on the authority of al-Aʿmash, on the authority of Ibrāhīm, concerning His word: يُولِجُ اللَّيْلَ فِي النَّهَارِ وَيُولِجُ النَّهَارَ فِي اللَّيْلِ — he said: the passing of the night into the day, and the passing of the day into the night.
Abū al-Sāʾib related to me, saying: Abū Muʿāwiya related to us, on the authority of al-Aʿmash, on the authority of Ibrāhīm, concerning His word: يُولِجُ اللَّيْلَ فِي النَّهَارِ وَيُولِجُ النَّهَارَ فِي اللَّيْلِ — he said: the shortening of the winter days in the length of the winter night, and the shortening of the summer night in the length of the summer day.
His word: وَهُوَ عَلِيمٌ بِذَاتِ الصُّدُورِ (and He is All-Knowing of what is in the breasts) — He says: and He possesses knowledge of the hidden thoughts in the breasts of His servants, and of what their souls intend of good or evil, or what their souls deliberate within themselves; nothing of that remains hidden from Him.
