And His word: وَأَقِيمُوا الْوَزْنَ بِالْقِسْطِ (55:9). He says: and set up the needle of the balance with justice.
And His word: وَلَا تُخْسِرُوا الْمِيزَانَ. The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: and do not diminish the weight when you weigh for the people, and do not wrong them.
And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes have spoken.
* Mention of who said that:
Ibn Bashshār related to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn Marwān related to us, saying: Abū al-ʿAwwām related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: وَالسَّمَاءَ رَفَعَهَا وَوَضَعَ الْمِيزَانَ، أَلَّا تَطْغَوْا فِي الْمِيزَانِ، وَأَقِيمُوا الْوَزْنَ بِالْقِسْطِ وَلَا تُخْسِرُوا الْمِيزَانَ. Qatāda said: Ibn ʿAbbās said: "O company of clients (mawālī), you have been given responsibility over two matters by which those before you perished: let a man fear Allah regarding his balance, let a man fear Allah regarding his measuring vessel. It is only a small thing that he sets right, and that does not diminish him; rather, Allah will increase it for him, if Allah wills."
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word: وَأَقِيمُوا الْوَزْنَ بِالْقِسْطِ وَلَا تُخْسِرُوا الْمِيزَانَ. He said: when he diminishes it (the weight), then he has caused it to fall short; the causing of it to fall short is the diminishing of it.
