Discussion of the explanation of the statement of the Exalted: وَمِنْ دُونِهِمَا جَنَّتَانِ (62) (And besides those two are two other gardens) (55:62).

The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: and besides these two gardens — those which Allah, exalted is His praise, described with the quality that He mentioned, and which He mentioned belong to whoever fears standing before his Lord — there are two more gardens.

Then the exegetes differed concerning the meaning of His statement: وَمِنْ دُونِهِمَا (and besides those two) in this place. Some said: its meaning is: and below those two in rank.

    * Mention of who said that:

Muḥammad ibn Manṣūr al-Ṭūsī related to us, saying: Isḥāq ibn Sulaymān related to us, saying: ʿAmr ibn Abī Qays related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Laylā, on the authority of al-Minhāl ibn ʿAmr, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning his statement: وَكَانَ عَرْشُهُ عَلَى الْمَاءِ (and His Throne was upon the water). He said: the Throne of Allah was upon the water; then He made for Himself a garden, then He made below it another garden, and then He enclosed both within a single pearl. He said: وَمِنْ دُونِهِمَا جَنَّتَانِ (and besides those two are two other gardens), and these are those which no one knows — or he said: and these are those two, which no one knows — no soul knows what comfort of the eyes has been kept hidden for them, as a reward for what they used to do. He said: and that is the one which the creatures do not know, what is within it — or: what is within it — every day there comes from it, or from those two, a gift to them.

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Yaʿqūb related to us, on the authority of ʿAnbasa, on the authority of Sālim al-Afṭas, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, with a similar narration.

And others said: no, its meaning is: and below those two in excellence.

    * Mention of who said that:

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning his statement: وَمِنْ دُونِهِمَا جَنَّتَانِ (and besides those two are two other gardens): those two are lesser than these two, and are destined for the people of the right hand.
