هَٰذِهِۦ جَهَنَّمُ ٱلَّتِى يُكَذِّبُ بِهَا ٱلْمُجْرِمُونَ

    The statement concerning the explanation of His saying, the Exalted: هَذِهِ جَهَنَّمُ الَّتِي يُكَذِّبُ بِهَا الْمُجْرِمُونَ ("This is the Hell (jahannam) which the criminals used to deny") (43)

    He, exalted is His mention, says: To those criminals — of whom He, praised be His laudation, has informed that on the Day of Resurrection they will be recognized by their marks, when they are seized by the forelocks and the feet — it will be said: this is the Hell (jahannam) which the criminals used to deny. He omitted the mention of "it will be said" (yuqāl), since the indication of the meaning of the statement suffices to convey it. And it has been mentioned that this, in the reading of ʿAbdallāh, reads: ( وهذه جهنم التي كنتما بها تكذّبان تصليانها، لا تموتان فيها ولا تحييان ) ("And this is the Hell which you both used to deny; you will burn in it, you will not die therein nor remain alive therein").     (1) Al-Farrāʾ, in Maʿānī al-Qurʾān (university photocopy 24059, page 321), mentioned the reading of ʿAbdallāh, and added in it after his word "( تحييان )" ("nor remain alive therein"): "تطوفان" ("they go around"). End of citation. And "tatūfān" ("they go around") is the beginning of the verse that comes after it: ( يطوفون بينها .... إلخ ) ("They go around between it.... etc.").

    القول في تأويل قوله تعالى : هَذِهِ جَهَنَّمُ الَّتِي يُكَذِّبُ بِهَا الْمُجْرِمُونَ (43) يقول تعالى ذكره: يقال لهؤلاء المجرمين الذين أخبر جلّ ثناؤه أنهم يعرفون يوم القيامة بسيماهم حين يؤخذ بالنواصي والأقدام: هذه جهنم التي يكذّب بها المجرمون، فترك ذكر " يقال " اكتفاء بدلالة الكلام عليه منه، وذُكر أن ذلك في قراءة عبد الله ( وهذه جهنم التي كنتما بها تكذّبان تصليانها، لا تموتان فيها ولا تحييان ).
