إِنَّ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ فِى ضَلَٰلٍۢ وَسُعُرٍۢ

Indeed, the criminals are in error and madness.

    And His words "Truly, the criminals are in error and in raging fires (suʿur)" (54:47): The Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says: Truly, the criminals are in straying from the truth, and they tread a path that is not the right guidance. "and in suʿur": He says: in a burning brought on by the severity of the hardship and the toil in the service of falsehood.

    As Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, he said: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His words "in error and in suʿur," he said: in hardship (ʿanāʾ).

    وقوله ( إِنَّ الْمُجْرِمِينَ فِي ضَلالٍ وَسُعُرٍ ) يقول تعالى ذكره: إن المجرمين في ذهاب عن الحقّ, وأخذ على غير هدى ( وَسُعُرٍ ) يقول: في احتراق من شدّة العناء والنصب في الباطل. كما حدثنا ابن عبد الأعلى, قال: ثنا ابن ثور, عن معمر, عن قتادة, في قوله ( فِي ضَلالٍ وَسُعُرٍ ) قال: في عناء.
