ذُو مِرَّةٍۢ فَٱسْتَوَىٰ

One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form

    His statement: ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَاسْتَوَى "possessor of strength; and he rose up." The exegetes differed over the interpretation of His statement ذُو مِرَّةٍ "possessor of mirra." Some of them said: Its meaning is: possessor of a beautiful stature.

    * The mention of who said that:

    ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His statement: ذُو مِرَّةٍ "possessor of mirra" — he said: possessor of a beautiful appearance.

    Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَاسْتَوَى "possessor of mirra; and he rose up" — possessor of a tall, beautiful stature.

    Others said: No, its meaning is: possessor of strength.

    Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to me, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid: ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَاسْتَوَى "possessor of mirra; and he rose up" — he said: possessor of strength: Jibrīl.

    Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān: ذُو مِرَّةٍ "possessor of mirra" — he said: possessor of strength.

    Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His statement: ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَاسْتَوَى "possessor of mirra; and he rose up" — he said: possessor of strength; al-mirra is strength.

    Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Ḥakkām related to us, on the authority of Abū Jaʿfar, on the authority of al-Rabīʿ: ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَاسْتَوَى "possessor of mirra; and he rose up" — Jibrīl, peace be upon him.

    The correct of the two statements concerning this is the statement of the one who said: by al-mirra is meant: the soundness of the body and its freedom from defects and ailments. And the body, when it is so in a person, is strong. We have said that this is so because al-mirra is the singular of al-mirar, and what is meant by it is: possessor of a well-formed mirra. And when the mirra is sound, the person is sound. And of that is the statement of the Prophet ﷺ: "Charity is not permissible for a wealthy person, nor for one who possesses a sound, well-formed mirra."

    وقوله: ( ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَاسْتَوَى ) اختلف أهل التأويل في تأويل قوله: ( ذُو مِرَّةٍ ) فقال بعضهم: معناه: ذو خَلْق حسن. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني عليّ, قال: ثنا أبو صالح, قال: ثني معاوية, عن عليّ, عن ابن عباس, في قوله ( ذُو مِرَّةٍ ) قال: ذو منظر حسن. حدثنا بشر, قال: ثنا يزيد, قال: ثنا سعيد, عن قتادة ( ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَاسْتَوَى ) : ذو خَلْق طويل حسن. وقال آخرون: بل معنى ذلك: ذو قوّة. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني محمد بن عمرو, قال : ثنا أبو عاصم, قال: ثنا عيسى; وحدثني الحارث, قال: ثني الحسن, قال: ثنا ورقاء جميعا, عن ابن أبي نجيح, عن مجاهد ( ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَاسْتَوَى ) قال: ذو قوة جبريل. حدثنا ابن حُميد, قال: ثنا مهران عن سفيان ( ذُو مِرَّةٍ ) قال: ذو قوّة. حدثني يونس, قال: أخبرنا ابن وهب, قال: قال ابن زيد, في قوله: ( ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَاسْتَوَى ) قال: ذو قوّة, المرّة: القوّة. حدثنا ابن حُميد, قال: ثنا حكام عن أبي جعفر عن الربيع ( ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَاسْتَوَى ) جبريل عليه السلام . وأولى القولين في ذلك بالصواب قول من قال: عنى بالمرّة: صحة الجسم وسلامته من الآفات والعاهات. والجسم إذا كان كذلك من الإنسان, كان قويا, وإنما قلنا إن ذلك كذلك, لأن المرة واحدة المرر, وإنما أُريد به: ذو مرة سوية. وإذا كانت المرّة صحيحة, كان الإنسان صحيحا. ومنه قول النبيّ صلى الله عليه وسلم: " لا تَحِلُّ الصَّدقَةَ لِغَنِيّ, وَلا لذي مرةٍ سَويَّ".
