Tabari (1 passage)

  1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

His statement rejoicing in fruits (fākihīn) — He says: with them there is much fruit. And that is by analogy with the statement of the Arabs concerning a man who has many dates: a date-man (tāmir), or who has much milk, of whom it is said: he is a milk-man (lābin), as al-Ḥuṭayʾa said:

You deceived me and claimed that you were

    a milk-man (lābin) in the summer, a date-man (tāmir) (1)

And His statement with what their Lord has given them — He says: with them there is much fruit through Allah's bestowal upon them thereof. And their Lord has guarded them against the punishment of the Hellfire (al-jaḥīm) — He says: and their Lord has averted from them His punishment with which He has punished the inhabitants of the Hellfire (al-jaḥīm).

    The footnotes:

    (1) The verse is by al-Ḥuṭayʾa (his dīwān 17). The author adduces it as proof that the meaning of His statement, the Exalted, rejoicing in fruits with what their Lord has given them is: with them there is much fruit; and it is like the statement of al-Ḥuṭayʾa "lābin" and "tāmir," that is: possessor of milk and possessor of dates, that is: with you in the summer there is much of both. Al-Sukkarī said in the commentary on the dīwān: he means that you deceived me and claimed that you would feed me dates and milk, so that I contented myself with those two, but you did not do it. Thus al-Sukkarī. He praises Baghīḍ and satirizes al-Zibriqān. The verse has already been adduced as proof earlier in the part (23:19), where we explained it more extensively than here, so consult it there.
