Tafseer of The Table · Al-Maaida · 5:36
Indeed, those who disbelieve - if they should have all that is in the earth and the like of it with it by which to ransom themselves from the punishment of the Day of Resurrection, it will not be accepted from them, and for them is a painful punishment

The statement concerning the explanation of His word, mighty is His mention: Inna lladhīna kafarū law anna lahum mā fī l-arḍi jamīʿan wa-mithlahu maʿahu li-yaftadū bihi min ʿadhābi yawmi l-qiyāmati mā tuqubbila minhum wa-lahum ʿadhābun alīmun (36)
(Truly, those who have disbelieved — were they to possess all that is on the earth and the like of it along with it, in order to ransom themselves thereby from the punishment (ʿadhāb) on the Day of Resurrection, it would not be accepted from them; and for them there is a painful punishment (36).)
Abū Jaʿfar said: He says, mighty is His mention: truly, those who have denied the sovereign right of their Lord and have worshipped another besides Him — from among the children of Israel who worshipped the calf, and from among others who worshipped the graven images and the idols, and who perished upon that before their repentance — were they to possess ownership over all that is on the earth and the like of it again along with it, in order to ransom themselves thereby from the punishment of Allah against them on account of their negligence regarding His command and their worship of another besides Him on the Day of Resurrection, and were they to ransom themselves with all of that, then Allah would not accept that from them as a ransom and a substitute for their punishment and their torment, but rather He will torment them in the boiling water on the Day of Resurrection with a punishment that inflicts pain upon them.

This is only a proclamation from Allah, exalted is His praise, to the Jews who were in the midst of the place of refuge of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: that they and the rest of the polytheists (mushrikīn) are equal before Him with Him as regards the painful punishment and the tremendous torment that befalls them. That is because they used to say: lan tamassanā l-nāru illā ayyāman maʿdūdatan (the Fire will only touch us for a number of counted days), out of self-deception with respect to Allah, mighty and exalted, and out of lying against Him. Then He gave them the lie, exalted is His mention, with this verse and with the one following it, and cut off their craving, and said to them and to all who disbelieve in Him and in His Messenger: "Inna lladhīna kafarū law anna lahum mā fī l-arḍi jamīʿan wa-mithlahu maʿahu li-yaftadū bihi min ʿadhābi yawmi l-qiyāmati mā tuqubbila minhum wa-lahum ʿadhābun alīmun * Yurīdūna an yakhrujū mina l-nāri wa-mā hum bi-khārijīna minhā wa-lahum ʿadhābun muqīmun" (Truly, those who have disbelieved — were they to possess all that is on the earth and the like of it along with it, in order to ransom themselves thereby from the punishment on the Day of Resurrection, it would not be accepted from them; and for them there is a painful punishment. * They will wish to come out of the Fire, but they will not come out of it; and for them there is an abiding punishment). He says to them, exalted is His praise: so do not, O disbelievers, cherish any craving for the acceptance of any ransom from you, nor for your coming out of the Fire through the intercession of your forefathers with Me after you have entered it, if you die in your disbelief in which you are; but turn back to Allah with a sincere repentance (tawba naṣūḥ).
