The discourse on the explanation of His statement: When it is said to them: "Come to what Allah has sent down and to the Messenger," they say: "Sufficient for us is that upon which we found our forefathers." Even though their forefathers knew nothing and were not rightly guided? (5:104)
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose praise is proclaimed, says: And when it is said to these who slit the ear of the baḥīras and let the sāʾibas roam free — those who do not realize that, by ascribing the prohibition of those things to Allah, the Exalted, they are inventing a lie against Allah — "Come to the revelation of Allah and the verses of His Book and to His Messenger, so that the falsehood may become clear to you of what you say when you ascribe to Allah, the Exalted, the prohibition of those things which you prohibit," then they answer the one who calls them to that with the words: "Sufficient for us is that upon which we found our predecessors, our forefathers, according to what they did." And they say: "We are their followers, and they are for us leaders and predecessors; we have enough in what we have taken over from them, and we are content with that upon which they stood concerning prohibition and permission."
Allah, the Exalted, whose praise is proclaimed, said to His prophet Muḥammad ﷺ: Even though the forefathers of these who make this statement knew nothing? He says: They did not know that what they ascribe to Allah, the Exalted, concerning the prohibition of the baḥīra, the sāʾiba, the waṣīla, and the ḥām, is a lie and an invention against Allah, without any reality or validity, for they were the followers of the inventors who had begun prohibiting these things, as an invention against Allah, through their statement in which they ascribed to Allah, the Exalted, what they ascribed. And in that which they did of this, they were not upon righteousness and correctness, but rather they were in error and misguidance.
