And if they had been patient until you [could] come out to them, it would have been better for them. But Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

The explanation of the statement of the Exalted: وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ صَبَرُوا حَتَّى تَخْرُجَ إِلَيْهِمْ لَكَانَ خَيْرًا لَهُمْ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ (5) (And if only they had been patient until you came out to them, that would have been better for them. And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful) (49:5).
And His statement ( And if only they had been patient until you came out to them, that would have been better for them ). The Exalted, whose praise is mentioned, says: and if these people who call out to you, O Muḥammad, from behind the chambers had been patient and had not called you until you came out to them — when you would come out — then that would have been better for them with Allah, because Allah has commanded them to honor you and hold you in high esteem; so by refraining from calling out to you they would be refraining from what Allah has forbidden them. ( And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful ). The Exalted, whose praise is mentioned, says: Allah is full of forgiveness toward whoever has called you from behind the partition, if he repents of his disobedience to Allah by calling you in that manner, and returns to the command of Allah in this and in all else; Merciful toward him, in the sense that He will not punish him for that sin after he has repented of it.
