The explanation of His word, the Exalted: يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ وَلا تُبْطِلُوا أَعْمَالَكُمْ ("O you who believe, obey Allah and obey the Messenger, and do not render your deeds void.")
The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا ("O you who believe") in Allah and His Messenger, أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ ("obey Allah and obey the Messenger") in their command and their prohibition. وَلا تُبْطِلُوا أَعْمَالَكُمْ ("and do not render your deeds void"). He says: and do not, through your disobedience to them both and through your disbelief in your Lord, render void the reward of your deeds, for disbelief in Allah nullifies the past good deed.
And in accordance with what we have said about this, the people of interpretation (taʾwīl) have spoken.
* Mention of who said that:
Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ وَلا تُبْطِلُوا أَعْمَالَكُمْ ("O you who believe, obey Allah and obey the Messenger, and do not render your deeds void") ... the verse: Whoever of you is able not to render void any good deed he has performed by an evil deed, let him do so, and there is no power except through Allah; for the good lifts away the evil, and the evil lifts away the good, and the worth of deeds lies in their conclusions.
