"He hears the verses of Allah being recited to him" (45:8) — He says: he hears the verses of the Book of Allah being recited to him. "Then he persists" — in his unbelief (kufr) and his sin, so that he continues to persist therein, showing no repentance for it and not turning away from it — "arrogant" (mustakbiran) toward his Lord, too proud to submit to His command and His prohibition — "as if he had not heard them" — He says: as if he had not heard what was recited to him of the verses of Allah, on account of his persistence in his unbelief. "So announce to him a painful punishment" — He says: so announce then, O Muḥammad, to this liar and sinner who has this description, a punishment from Allah for him. "Painful" (alīm) — that is to say: agonizing, in the Fire of Hell (jahannam) on the Day of Resurrection.
