The discourse on the explanation of His statement, the Exalted: And when he learns something of Our signs, he takes them in mockery; for such there is a humiliating punishment (9)

The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: ( And when he learns ) — this lying sinner — ( of ) the signs of Allah ( something, he takes them in mockery ). He says: he takes those signs which he learns in mockery, he derides them. And that is like the deed of Abū Jahl when indeed, the tree of al-Zaqqūm * is the food of the sinner was sent down, when he called for dates and butter and said: "eat of this al-zaqqūm; Muḥammad promises you nothing but honey," and what resembles that of their deeds.

And His statement ( for such there is a humiliating punishment ) — the Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: these who perform this deed, and they are those who hear the signs of Allah when they are recited to them, and then out of arrogance persist in their unbelief, and take the signs of Allah which they have learned in mockery — for them, on the Day of Resurrection, there is from Allah a humiliating punishment (ʿadhāb) that humiliates them and debases them in the fire of hell (jahannam), because of the fact that they were in this world too arrogant to obey Allah and to follow His signs. And the Exalted, whose mention is exalted, said only ( these ), in the plural, while the expression before it had already passed (2), as a referral back of the utterance to the meaning of the whole in His statement woe to every lying sinner .
