The statement concerning the explanation of His saying, the Exalted: (Whoever does good does so for himself, and whoever does evil does so against himself; then to your Lord you shall be returned) (15).

He, exalted is His mention, says: Whoever of Allah's servants acts in obedience to Him, and adheres to His command and restrains himself by His prohibition, has performed that good work for himself and sought thereby its deliverance from the punishment of Allah; he obeyed his Lord for no reason other than that, for it benefits none but himself, and Allah is independent of the work of every worker. وَمَنْ أَسَاءَ فَعَلَيْهَا — He says: and whoever makes his conduct in the worldly life evil through his disobedience therein to his Lord and his transgression therein against His command and prohibition, has wronged himself, for he has thereby ruined it and caused it thereby to incur His displeasure, and he has harmed none but himself. ثُمَّ إِلَى رَبِّكُمْ تُرْجَعُونَ — He says: then all of you, O people, after your death, shall return to your Lord, and then the doer of good among you will be rewarded for his good deeds, and the doer of evil for his evil deeds. So whoever of you arrives before Him with a good work will be rewarded with a good reward, and whoever of you arrives before Him with an evil work will be requited with an evil requital.
