And His statement: وَنَعْمَةٍ كَانُوا فِيهَا فَاكِهِينَ (and a bounty in which they took delight). He, exalted is His remembrance, says: and they were driven out from a bounty in which they took delight, enjoyed themselves, and lived in ease.

The reciters differed over the reading of His statement فَاكِهِينَ (taking delight). The general body of reciters of the cities read it — with the exception of Abū Jaʿfar the reciter — فَاكِهِينَ according to the meaning I have described. And Abū Rajāʾ al-ʿUṭāridī, al-Ḥasan, and Abū Jaʿfar al-Madanī read فَكِهينَ with the meaning: insolent and exultant.

And the correct of the two readings, in my view therein, is the reading which the reciters of the cities follow, namely فَاكِهِينَ with the alif, with the meaning: living in ease.

And in a similar sense to what we have said about this, the exegetes have spoken.

    * Mention of who said that:

Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda وَنَعْمَةٍ كَانُوا فِيهَا فَاكِهِينَ (and a bounty in which they took delight): living in ease. He said: yes, by Allah, Allah drove him out from His gardens, His springs, and His fields, until He sank him in the sea.
