The explanation of His word, the Exalted: How can the reminder still benefit them, when a clear messenger has already come to them? (13)
He, exalted is His mention, says: From where would remembrance come to these polytheists (mushrikīn), after the affliction has descended upon them, while they turned away from Our messenger when he came to them, averting themselves from him? They accepted no admonition from what was recited to them of Our Book, nor did they let themselves be admonished by the proofs with which he admonished them, and they said: he is only a man possessed who has been taught these words.
And in accordance with what we have said in the explanation of His word ( How can the reminder still benefit them ), the exegetes have spoken.
* Mention of who said that:
ʿAlī related to me, he said: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, he said: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word ( How can the reminder still benefit them ), he says: how would it be for them.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, he said: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, he said: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, he said: al-Ḥasan related to us, he said: Warqāʾ related to us — both of them — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid ( How can the reminder still benefit them ): after this affliction has occurred.
