Tafseer of The Smoke · Ad-Dukhaan · 44:14

ثُمَّ تَوَلَّوْا۟ عَنْهُ وَقَالُوا۟ مُعَلَّمٌۭ مَّجْنُونٌ

Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman."

    And in agreement with what we have likewise said concerning His word ( Then they turned away from him and said: an instructed madman ), the exegetes have spoken.

    Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both of them — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid ( Then they turned away from him and said: an instructed madman ), he said: they turned away from Muḥammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: an instructed madman.

    وبنحو الذي قلنا أيضا في قوله ( ثُمَّ تَوَلَّوْا عَنْهُ وَقَالُوا مُعَلَّمٌ مَجْنُونٌ ) قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني محمد بن عمرو, قال: ثنا أبو عاصم, قال: ثنا عيسى; وحدثني الحارث, قال: ثنا الحسن, قال: ثنا ورقاء جميعا, عن ابن أبي نجيح, عن مجاهد ( ثُمَّ تَوَلَّوْا عَنْهُ وَقَالُوا مُعَلَّمٌ مَجْنُونٌ ) قال: تولوا عن محمد عليه الصلاة والسلام, وقالوا: معلم مجنون.
