It will not be allowed to subside for them, and they, therein, are in despair.
Important: The Arabic source text is always authoritative. This translation is a study aid and has not been verified by scholars — do not use it as a basis for religious proof or for deriving rulings (ahkam). When in doubt, always consult the Arabic text and a qualified scholar.
"It shall not be lightened for them" — He says: the punishment (ʿadhāb) shall not be eased for them. The original meaning of al-futūr is: weakness. ( and therein they are in despair ) — He says: and they are in the punishment of Hell (jahannam) in despair. The "hā" in "fīhi" refers back to the punishment. It is mentioned that in the recitation of ʿAbd Allāh it reads: "and therein they (feminine) are in despair," the meaning being: and they are in Hell (jahannam) in despair. The mublis (the one who is in despair) in this place is: the one who has abandoned hope of deliverance, who has lost courage and surrendered himself to the punishment and the tribulation.
And in agreement with what we have said concerning this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) spoke.
* Mention of who said that:
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda ( and therein they are in despair ): that is, those who have surrendered themselves.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, his statement: ( and therein they are in despair ) he said: those in despair.
And others said, according to what Muḥammad related to us, saying: Aḥmad related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī ( and therein they are in despair ): their condition has changed.
And we have already previously expounded the meaning of al-iblās with its supporting evidences, and the mention of those who differ concerning it, in a manner that renders it unnecessary to repeat it here.
