And We did not wrong them, but it was they who were the wrongdoers.

And His word: وَمَا ظَلَمْنَاهُمْ وَلَكِنْ كَانُوا هُمُ الظَّالِمِينَ ("And We did them no wrong, but it was they who did wrong"). He, exalted is His mention, says: And We did these criminals no wrong by doing to them what We have informed you, O people, that We have done to them, namely punishing them with the punishment (ʿadhāb) of Hell (jahannam). وَلَكِنْ كَانُوا هُمُ الظَّالِمِينَ ("but it was they who did wrong"), in that they worshipped in the life of this world something other than that which they were obligated to worship, and through their unbelief (kufr) in Allah and their denial of His oneness (tawḥīd).
