Thus were those [before you] deluded who were rejecting the signs of Allah.

And His statement: ( كَذَلِكَ يُؤْفَكُ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ يَجْحَدُونَ ) (Thus are turned away those who used to deny the signs of Allah). He says: just as you turn away from that, O people, and turn aside from the truth to falsehood, and from right guidance to error, so too did those who were before you among the nations turn away from it — those who denied the signs of Allah, that is to say, the proofs of Allah and His indications, and did not believe. He says: thus have you, O assembly of the Quraysh, trodden their way, and have gone along their path in error.
