The explanation of the saying of the Exalted: اللَّهُ الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ اللَّيْلَ لِتَسْكُنُوا فِيهِ وَالنَّهَارَ مُبْصِرًا إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى النَّاسِ وَلَكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لا يَشْكُرُونَ (40:61) (Allah is He Who has made for you the night that you may rest therein, and the day giving light. Indeed, Allah is full of bounty toward mankind, but most of mankind are not grateful) (40:61).
The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: Allah, to whom alone belongs divinity and to none other than Him does worship belong, whose attribute it is that He has made for you — O mankind — the night a dwelling place of rest, that you may find rest therein and repose from roaming about and toiling for sustenance and from the occupations in which you engaged during the day. ( وَالنَّهَارَ مُبْصِرًا ) (and the day giving light). He says: and He has made the day giving light for whoever sets out in it to seek his livelihood and pursue his needs, as a favor from Him thereby to you. ( إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَذُو فَضْلٍ عَلَى النَّاسِ ) (Indeed, Allah is full of bounty toward mankind). He says: Indeed, Allah is gracious toward you, O mankind, with a bounty that has no equal. ( وَلَكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لا يَشْكُرُونَ ) (but most of mankind are not grateful). He says: but most of them are not grateful to Him through obedience to Him and through sincerely devoting divinity and worship to Him, even though no prior benefit came to them from anyone else who would deserve the gratitude for it.
