And then We would have given them from Us a great reward.

The explanation of His word: وَإِذًا لآتَيْنَاهُمْ مِنْ لَدُنَّا أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا (And then We would have granted them from Ourselves a tremendous reward) (4:67).
Abū Jaʿfar said: Exalted is His praise, He means thereby: and if they had done that to which they are admonished, then that would have been better for them, because of Our granting to them, for their performing that to which they were admonished—namely, obeying Us and adhering to Our command—="a reward" (ajran), that is to say: a tremendous recompense and reward = and stronger in confirming their resolve and their views, and more powerful for them in their deeds, because of Our guiding them upon a straight path = that is to say: a way in which there is no crookedness, and that is the upright religion of Allah which He has chosen for His servants and which He has prescribed for them, and that is Islam.
