The statement concerning the interpretation of His word: أُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ لَعَنَهُمُ اللَّهُ وَمَنْ يَلْعَنِ اللَّهُ فَلَنْ تَجِدَ لَهُ نَصِيرًا ("Those are the ones whom Allah has cursed; and he whom Allah curses, for him you will find no helper") (4:52).
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted means by His word "those are the ones" these people, whom He has described with the attribute that a portion of the Book was given to them, while they believe in the jibt and the ṭāghūt — they are "the ones whom Allah has cursed." He says: Allah has humiliated them and removed them far from His mercy, on account of their belief in the jibt and the ṭāghūt, and their unbelief (kufr) in Allah and His Messenger out of obstinate rebellion against Allah and His Messenger, and on account of their saying to those who disbelieve: "These are better guided on the way than those who believe." And "he whom Allah curses," He says: and he whom Allah humiliates and removes far from His mercy — "for him you will find no helper," He says: for him you will find, O Muḥammad, no helper to help him against the punishment of Allah and His curse that befalls him, so as to avert that from him. As in:
9795 - Bishr ibn Muʿādh related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, he said: Kaʿb ibn al-Ashraf and Ḥuyayy ibn Akhṭab said what they said — that is, their saying: "These are better guided on the way than those who believe" — while they both knew that they were both lying. Then Allah revealed: "Those are the ones whom Allah has cursed; and he whom Allah curses, for him you will find no helper."
