﴿ وَأُمِرْتُ لأنْ أَكُونَ أَوَّلَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ ﴾ ("And I have been commanded to be the first of the Muslims"): He says: and my Lord — exalted be His praise — has commanded me to do this, so that by performing it I would be the first of you to submit to Islam, submitting to Him through the profession of His oneness (tawḥīd), devoting worship purely to Him, and dissociating from everything that is worshipped as gods besides Him.
