Explanation of the words of the Exalted: وَإِنَّ مِنْ شِيعَتِهِ لإِبْرَاهِيمَ (37:83) ("And indeed, among his following was Ibrāhīm") (83).
The Exalted, whose praise is sublime, says: and indeed, among the followers of Nūḥ, those who followed his way and his creed — by Allah — was Ibrāhīm, the intimate friend of the All-Merciful (al-Raḥmān).
And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.
* Mention of who said that:
ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to us, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning his words: وَإِنَّ مِنْ شِيعَتِهِ لإبْرَاهِيمَ ("And indeed, among his following was Ibrāhīm"), he says: belonging to the followers of his religion.
Ibn Ḥumayd related to me, saying: Ḥakkām related to us, on the authority of ʿAnbasa, on the authority of Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, on the authority of al-Qāsim ibn Abī Bazza, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning his words: وَإِنَّ مِنْ شِيعَتِهِ لإبْرَاهِيمَ ("And indeed, among his following was Ibrāhīm"), he said: upon the way of Nūḥ and his practice (sunna).
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both of them — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning his words: وَإِنَّ مِنْ شِيعَتِهِ لإبْرَاهِيمَ ("And indeed, among his following was Ibrāhīm"), he said: upon his way and his practice.
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: وَإِنَّ مِنْ شِيعَتِهِ لإبْرَاهِيمَ ("And indeed, among his following was Ibrāhīm"), he said: upon his religion and his creed.
Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Aḥmad related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī, concerning his words: وَإِنَّ مِنْ شِيعَتِهِ لإبْرَاهِيمَ ("And indeed, among his following was Ibrāhīm"), he said: belonging to the followers of his religion.
And some of the philologists claimed that the meaning of this is: and indeed, among the following of Muḥammad was Ibrāhīm. He said: this is like His words وَآيَةٌ لَهُمْ أَنَّا حَمَلْنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ ("And a sign for them is that We carried their progeny"), in the sense: We carried the progeny of those to whom they belong, and thus He made them a progeny for them, while that one had already preceded them.
