"Peace upon Noah among the worlds."

And His statement ( سَلامٌ عَلَى نُوحٍ فِي الْعَالَمِينَ ) — "Peace be upon Nūḥ among the worlds" — means: a safeguarding from Allah for Nūḥ among the worlds, that no one should remember him with evil. The word salām ("peace") is in the nominative (marfūʿ) by means of ʿalā. Some grammarians of Kūfa, however, said: its meaning is: "And We left over him among the later generations ( سَلامٌ عَلَى نُوحٍ )," that is to say: We left behind over him this statement, just as you say: "I recited from the Qurʾān الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ " — then the sentence is, in terms of meaning, in the accusative (naṣb), but you put it in the nominative because of the lām. Likewise salāmun ʿalā Nūḥin: you put it in the nominative because of ʿalā, while in terms of interpretation it is in the accusative. He said: and if it were to read "We left over him peace" (tarknā ʿalayhi salāman), that would likewise be correct.
