And We saved him and his family from the great affliction.

( وَنَجَّيْنَاهُ وَأَهْلَهُ ) — "And We saved him and his family" — this means: the family of Nūḥ, those who embarked with him aboard the ship. We have already mentioned them earlier, and we have set forth the disagreement of the scholars (ʿulamāʾ) concerning their number.
And in accordance with what we have said about this, the exegetes (ahl al-taʾwīl) spoke.
* Mention of who said that:
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning ( وَلَقَدْ نَادَانَا نُوحٌ فَلَنِعْمَ الْمُجِيبُونَ ), he said: Allah answered him. And His statement ( مِنَ الْكَرْبِ الْعَظِيمِ ) — "from the tremendous distress" — says: from the affliction and adversity in which he was on account of the disbelievers (al-kāfirīn), and from the anguish of the flood and the drowning by which the people of Nūḥ perished.
As Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn related to me, saying: Aḥmad ibn al-Mufaḍḍal related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī, concerning ( وَنَجَّيْنَاهُ وَأَهْلَهُ مِنَ الْكَرْبِ الْعَظِيمِ ), he said: from the drowning.
