And there had already strayed before them most of the former peoples,

The discourse on the explanation of His statement, the Exalted: وَلَقَدْ ضَلَّ قَبْلَهُمْ أَكْثَرُ الأَوَّلِينَ ("And indeed, before them the most of the former peoples went astray") (37:71).
He — exalted be His mention — says: and indeed there went astray, O Muḥammad, away from the right path and the way of truth, before the polytheists of your people from the Quraysh, the most of the bygone communities who were before them.
