فَهُمْ عَلَىٰٓ ءَاثَٰرِهِمْ يُهْرَعُونَ

So they hastened [to follow] in their footsteps.

    ( فَهُمْ عَلَى آثَارِهِمْ يُهْرَعُونَ ) — "And they were driven onward upon their footsteps" — He says: these are driven onward upon their path, so that they may follow the traces and the custom of their forefathers. From this one says: ahraʿa fulān — "so-and-so was driven onward" — when he proceeds with a hurried gait in which there is something of trembling.

    And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes (ahl al-taʾwīl) spoke.

    * Mention of who said that:

    ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning his statement ( إِنَّهُمْ أَلْفَوْا آبَاءَهُمْ ضَالِّينَ ) — "Indeed, they found their forefathers astray": that is, they found their forefathers.

    Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning (إنهم ألفوا آباءهم): that is, they found their forefathers.

    Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning his statement ( فَهُمْ عَلَى آثَارِهِمْ يُهْرَعُونَ ), he said: like the manner of the trot (al-harwala).

    Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning ( فَهُمْ عَلَى آثَارِهِمْ يُهْرَعُونَ ): that is, they hasten therein with great speed.

    Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Aḥmad ibn al-Mufaḍḍal related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī, concerning his statement ( يُهْرَعُونَ ), he said: they hasten.

    Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning his statement يُهْرَعُونَ إِلَيْهِ — "they hasten toward him": he said: they speed toward him.

    ( فَهُمْ عَلَى آثَارِهِمْ يُهْرَعُونَ ) يقول: فهؤلاء يُسْرع بهم في طريقهم، ليقتفوا آثارهم وسنتهم; يقال منه: أهرع فلان: إذا سار سيرا حثيثا فيه شبه بالرعدة. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني عليّ، قال: ثنا أبو صالح، قال: ثني معاوية، عن عليّ، عن ابن عباس، قوله ( إِنَّهُمْ أَلْفَوْا آبَاءَهُمْ ضَالِّينَ )أي وجدوا آباءهم. حدثنا بشر، قال ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة (إنهم ألفوا آباءهم) : أي وجدوا آباءهم. وبنحو الذي قلنا في يهرعون أيضا، قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني محمد بن عمرو، قال: ثنا أبو عاصم، قال: ثنا عيسى; وحدثني الحارث، قال: ثنا الحسن، قال: ثنا ورقاء جميعا، عن ابن أبي نجيح، عن مجاهد، قوله ( فَهُمْ عَلَى آثَارِهِمْ يُهْرَعُونَ ) قال: كهيئة الهرْولَة. حدثنا بشر، قال ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة ( فَهُمْ عَلَى آثَارِهِمْ يُهْرَعُونَ ) : أي يُسرعون إسراعا في ذلك. حدثنا محمد بن الحسين، قال: ثنا أحمد بن المفضل، قال: ثنا أسباط، عن السديّ، في قوله ( يُهْرَعُونَ ) قال: يُسْرِعون. حدثني يونس، قال: أخبرنا ابن وهب، قال: قال ابن زيد، فى قوله يُهْرَعُونَ إِلَيْهِ قال: يستعجلون إليه
