إِنَّهُمْ أَلْفَوْا۟ ءَابَآءَهُمْ ضَآلِّينَ

Indeed they found their fathers astray.

    His statement إِنَّهُمْ أَلْفَوْا آبَاءَهُمْ ضَالِّينَ ("Indeed, they found their fathers astray") means: indeed, these polytheists (mushrikīn), who became arrogant when it was said to them: "Say: there is no god but Allah," found their fathers to be astray, having deviated from the straight path, not walking upon the road of the truth.

    وقوله ( إِنَّهُمْ أَلْفَوْا آبَاءَهُمْ ضَالِّينَ ) يقول: إن هؤلاء المشركين الذين إذا قيل لهم: قولوا لا إله إلا الله يستكبرون، وجدوا آباءهم ضلالا عن قصد السبيل، غير سالكين مَحَجَّة الحق.
