And His statement yuṭāfu ʿalayhim bi-kaʾsin min maʿīnin ("a cup from a flowing spring is passed round among them"): the Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: the servants pass round among them a cup (kaʾs) of flowing wine (khamr), visible to their eyes, not hidden.

As Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, yuṭāfu ʿalayhim bi-kaʾsin min maʿīnin: he said: a cup of flowing wine, and al-maʿīn is that which flows.

Muḥammad ibn Bashshār related to us, he said: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, he said: Sufyān related to us, on the authority of Salama ibn Nubayṭ, on the authority of al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Muzāḥim, concerning His statement bi-kaʾsin min maʿīnin: he said: every "cup" (kaʾs) in the Qurʾān is wine (khamr).

Ibn Bashshār related to us, he said: ʿAbdullāh ibn Dāwūd related to us, on the authority of Salama ibn Nubayṭ, on the authority of al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Muzāḥim, he said: every "cup" (kaʾs) in the Qurʾān is wine (khamr).

Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn related to us, he said: Aḥmad related to us, he said: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī, concerning His statement bi-kaʾsin min maʿīnin: he said: the wine (khamr). And al-kaʾs, according to the Arabs, is: any vessel in which there is drink; if it contains no drink, then it is not a "cup" (kaʾs), but it is merely a vessel.
