Muḥammad ibn Saʿd narrated to me, he said: My father narrated to me, he said: My uncle narrated to me, he said: My father narrated to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word: "If only we had a reminder from the ancients * then we would surely have been sincere servants of Allah." He said: When there came to the polytheists (mushrikīn) among the people of Mecca the reminder of the ancients and the knowledge of the later ones, they denied the Book ( and they shall come to know ). He says: Muḥammad has already come to you with that, and yet they denied the Qurʾān and that with which Muḥammad came.
