1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

   The explanation of His statement, the Exalted: الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمْ مِنَ الشَّجَرِ الأَخْضَرِ نَارًا فَإِذَا أَنْتُمْ مِنْهُ تُوقِدُونَ (He who has made for you fire out of the green tree, and behold, you kindle from it) (80).

   The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: say: He brings them back to life who brought them forth the first time, الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمْ مِنَ الشَّجَرِ الأخْضَرِ نَارًا (He who has made for you fire out of the green tree). He says: He who has brought forth for you out of the green tree fire that burns the tree; carrying out what He wills is not impossible for Him, and He is not incapable of bringing back to life the bones that have already decayed and restoring them as a well-formed human being and a new creation, just as He began them the first time.

   And in the sense of what we have said about this, the scholars of exegesis spoke.

   * Mention of who said that:

   Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمْ مِنَ الشَّجَرِ الأخْضَرِ نَارًا (He who has made for you fire out of the green tree). He says: He who has brought forth this fire out of this tree is able to resurrect it.

   His statement فَإِذَا أَنْتُمْ مِنْهُ تُوقِدُونَ (and behold, you kindle from it). He says: and behold, you kindle the fire out of this tree. And He said مِنْهُ (minhu, "from it," masculine), and the hāʾ refers to al-shajar (the tree), and He did not say "minhā" (feminine), even though al-shajar is the plural of shajara, because it falls under the manner of al-thamar (the fruit) and al-ḥaṣā (the pebbles). And had it been said "minhā," that too would have been correct, for the Arabs make something of this kind both masculine and feminine.

   القول في تأويل قوله تعالى : الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمْ مِنَ الشَّجَرِ الأَخْضَرِ نَارًا فَإِذَا أَنْتُمْ مِنْهُ تُوقِدُونَ (80) يقول تعالى ذكره: قل يحييها الذي أنشأها أول مرة ( الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمْ &; 20-556 &; مِنَ الشَّجَرِ الأخْضَرِ نَارًا ) يقول: الذي أخرج لكم من الشجر الأخضر نارا تُحْرق الشجر، لا يمتنع عليه فعل ما أراد، ولا يعجز عن إحياء العظام التي قد رَمَّت، وإعادتها بشَرا سويا، وخلقا جديدا، كما بدأها أول مرة. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة ( الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمْ مِنَ الشَّجَرِ الأخْضَرِ نَارًا ) يقول: الذي أخرج هذه النار من هذا الشجر قادر أن يبعثه . قوله ( فَإِذَا أَنْتُمْ مِنْهُ تُوقِدُونَ ) يقول: فإذا أنتم من هذا الشجر توقدون النار؛ وقال ( مِنْهُ) والهاء من ذكر الشجر، ولم يقل: منها، والشجر جمع شجرة، لأنه خرج مخرج الثمر والحصَى، ولو قيل: منها كان صوابا أيضًا، لأن العرب تذكِّر مثل هذا وتؤنِّثه.
