1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

   And His statement إِنِّي آمَنْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ فَاسْمَعُونِ ("Indeed, I have believed in your Lord, so listen to me") — people have differed concerning its meaning. Some said: this believer spoke these words to his people, to inform them of his belief in Allāh.

   * Mention of those who said that:

   Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Salama related to us, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq, concerning what reached him, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, and on the authority of Kaʿb, and on the authority of Wahb ibn Munabbih, concerning إِنِّي آمَنْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ فَاسْمَعُونِ: Indeed, I have believed in your Lord in whom you have not believed, so listen to my word.

   And others said: no, by it he addressed the messengers, and said to them: listen to my word, that you may bear witness for me before my Lord concerning what I say to you, and that I have believed in you and followed you. It is mentioned that when he had said these words and had given his people the counsel that Allāh has mentioned in His Book, they attacked him and killed him.

   Then the scholars of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) differed concerning the manner in which they killed him. Some said: they stoned him with stones.

   * Mention of those who said that:

   Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning وَمَا لِيَ لا أَعْبُدُ الَّذِي فَطَرَنِي وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ ("And why should I not worship Him who created me and to whom you will be returned?"): this was a man who called his people to Allāh and openly gave them counsel, whereupon they killed him for that. It was related to us that they stoned him with stones, while he was saying: "O Allāh, guide my people, O Allāh, guide my people, O Allāh, guide my people," until they killed him in that state.

   And others said: no, they fell upon him and trampled him with their feet until he died.

   * Mention of those who said that:

   Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Salama related to us, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq, concerning what reached him, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, and on the authority of Kaʿb, and on the authority of Wahb ibn Munabbih: he said to them وَمَا لِيَ لا أَعْبُدُ الَّذِي فَطَرَنِي ("And why should I not worship Him who created me?") … up to his statement فَاسْمَعُونِ ("so listen to me"), whereupon they sprang upon him as one man and killed him and overpowered him because of his weakness and illness, while there was no one to defend him.

   Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Salama related to us, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq, on the authority of some of his companions, that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd used to say: they trampled him with their feet until his entrails came out through his backside.

   وقوله ( إِنِّي آمَنْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ فَاسْمَعُونِ ) فاختلف في معنى ذلك، فقال بعضهم: قال هذا القول هذا المؤمن لقومه يعلمهم إيمانه بالله. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثنا ابن حميد، قال: ثنا سلمة، عن ابن إسحاق فيما بلغه، عن ابن عباس، وعن كعب، وعن وهب بن منبه ( إِنِّي آمَنْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ فَاسْمَعُونِ ) إني آمنت بربكم الذي كفرتم به، فاسمعوا قولي . وقال آخرون: بل خاطب بذلك الرسل، وقال لهم: اسمعوا قولي لتشهدوا لي بما أقول لكم عند ربي، وأني قد آمنت بكم واتبعتكم؛ فذكر أنه لما قال هذا القول، ونصح لقومه النصيحة التي ذكرها الله في كتابه وثبوا به فقتلوه. ثم اختلف أهل التأويل في صفة قتلهم إياه، فقال بعضهم: رجموه بالحجارة . * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة ( وَمَا لِيَ لا أَعْبُدُ الَّذِي فَطَرَنِي وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ ) هذا رجل دعا قومه إلى الله، وأبدى لهم &; 20-508 &; النصيحة فقتلوه على ذلك. وذُكر لنا أنهم كانوا يرجمونه بالحجارة، وهو يقول: اللهم اهد قومي، اللهم اهد قومي، اللهم اهد قومي، حتى أقْعَصوه وهو كذلك . وقال آخرون: بل وثبوا عليه، فوطئوه بأقدامهم حتى مات. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثنا ابن حميد، قال: ثنا سلمة، عن ابن إسحاق فيما بلغه، عن ابن عباس، وعن كعب، وعن وهب بن منبه قال لهم ( وَمَا لِيَ لا أَعْبُدُ الَّذِي فَطَرَنِي ) .. إلى قوله ( فَاسْمَعُونِ ) وثبوا وثبة رجل واحد فقتلوه واستضعفوه لضعفه وسقمه، ولم يكن أحد يدفع عنه حدثنا ابن حميد، قال: ثنا سلمة، عن ابن إسحاق، عن بعض أصحابه &; 20-509 &; أن عبد الله بن مسعود كان يقول: وطئوه بأرجلهم حتى خرج قُصْبه من دُبُره .
