The discourse on the explanation of His statement, the Exalted: قِيلَ ادْخُلِ الْجَنَّةَ قَالَ يَا لَيْتَ قَوْمِي يَعْلَمُونَ ("It was said: 'Enter the Garden.' He said: 'Oh, would that my people knew'") (36:26)

He, exalted is His mention, says: Allah said to him, when they had killed him in that manner and he met Him: ادْخُلِ الْجَنَّةَ ("Enter the Garden"). And when he entered it and beheld that with which Allah had honored him on account of his faith (īmān) and his steadfastness therein, قَالَ يَا لَيْتَ قَوْمِي يَعْلَمُونَ بِمَا غَفَرَ لِي رَبِّي ("he said: 'Oh, would that my people knew with what my Lord has forgiven me'"). He says: oh, would that they knew that the cause whereby my Lord forgave me my sins and made me one of those whom Allah has honored by admitting them into His Garden was my faith in Allah and my steadfastness therein, until I was killed — so that they might believe in Allah and merit the Garden.

And in the manner of what we have said concerning this, the scholars of exegesis have spoken.

    * Mention of those who said that:

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Salama related to us, saying: Ibn Isḥāq related to me, on the authority of some of his companions, that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd used to say: Allah said to him: enter the Garden, and he entered it alive, while sustenance was bestowed upon him therein; Allah had removed from him the illness of the world, its grief, and its weariness. And when he had come to the mercy of Allah, His Garden, and His honoring, قَالَ يَا لَيْتَ قَوْمِي يَعْلَمُونَ بِمَا غَفَرَ لِي رَبِّي وَجَعَلَنِي مِنَ الْمُكْرَمِينَ ("he said: 'Oh, would that my people knew with what my Lord has forgiven me and made me one of the honored ones'").

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement قِيلَ ادْخُلِ الْجَنَّةَ ("It was said: 'Enter the Garden'") — and when he entered it, قَالَ يَا لَيْتَ قَوْمِي يَعْلَمُونَ بِمَا غَفَرَ لِي رَبِّي وَجَعَلَنِي مِنَ الْمُكْرَمِينَ ("he said: 'Oh, would that my people knew with what my Lord has forgiven me and made me one of the honored ones'"). He said: you find the believer only as sincerely counseling, and you never find him as deceitful; and when he beheld the honoring of Allah, قَالَ يَا لَيْتَ قَوْمِي يَعْلَمُونَ بِمَا غَفَرَ لِي رَبِّي وَجَعَلَنِي مِنَ الْمُكْرَمِينَ , he wished, by Allah, that his people would know what he had beheld of the honoring of Allah and what had befallen him.

Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His statement قِيلَ ادْخُلِ الْجَنَّةَ ("It was said: 'Enter the Garden'"), he said: it was said: the Garden has become obligatory for him; that he said when he saw the reward.

Ibn Bashshār related to us, saying: Muʾammal related to us, saying: Sufyān related to us, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid: قِيلَ ادْخُلِ الْجَنَّةَ ("It was said: 'Enter the Garden'"), he said: the Garden has become obligatory for you.

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Ḥakkām related to us, on the authority of ʿAnbasa, on the authority of Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, on the authority of al-Qāsim ibn Abī Bazza, on the authority of Mujāhid: قِيلَ ادْخُلِ الْجَنَّةَ ("It was said: 'Enter the Garden'"), he said: the Garden has become obligatory for him.
