The explanation of the word of the Exalted: إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ فَاتَّخِذُوهُ عَدُوًّا إِنَّمَا يَدْعُو حِزْبَهُ لِيَكُونُوا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ (6) Indeed, Satan is an enemy to you, so take him as an enemy. He only calls his party so that they may be among the inhabitants of the blazing Fire (6)
He, exalted is His mention, says: (إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ) Indeed, Satan — whom I have forbidden you, O people, to let deceive you through his guile concerning Allah — (لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ فَاتَّخِذُوهُ عَدُوًّا) is an enemy to you, so take him as an enemy — He says: so assign to him in your estimation the standing of the enemy toward you, and be on guard against him through obedience to Allah and by treating him as a deceiver, just as you are on guard against your enemy whose harm you fear for yourselves. So do not obey him and do not follow his footsteps, for he only calls his party — he invites his following and whoever obeys him to obedience to him and to accepting him and to disbelief in Allah. (لِيَكُونُوا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ) so that they may be among the inhabitants of the blazing Fire — He says: so that they may be among those who abide forever in the Fire of Hell (jahannam), which blazes over its inhabitants.
And in accordance with what we have said about that, the exegetes have spoken.
* Mention of who said that:
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word (إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ فَاتَّخِذُوهُ عَدُوًّا) Indeed, Satan is an enemy to you, so take him as an enemy: indeed, it is a duty upon every Muslim to treat him as an enemy, and to treat him as an enemy means that he fights him through obedience to Allah. (إِنَّمَا يَدْعُو حِزْبَهُ) He only calls his party — and his party are his allies. (لِيَكُونُوا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ) so that they may be among the inhabitants of the blazing Fire, that is to say: so that he may drive them to the Fire; this, then, is his enmity.
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word (إِنَّمَا يَدْعُو حِزْبَهُ لِيَكُونُوا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ) He only calls his party so that they may be among the inhabitants of the blazing Fire, and he said: these are his party among mankind — he says: they are the party of Satan, and the party are his protectors whom he takes as allies and who take him as an ally. And he recited: Indeed, my Protector is Allah, who has sent down the Book, and He protects the righteous (إِنَّ وَلِيِّيَ اللَّهُ الَّذِي نَزَّلَ الْكِتَابَ وَهُوَ يَتَوَلَّى الصَّالِحِينَ).
