And His statement ( يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّ وَعْدَ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ ) O mankind, verily the promise of Allah is true — He, exalted is His mention, says to the polytheists of the Quraysh, who were branding the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a liar: O mankind, verily the promise of Allah to you by His might, on account of your persistence in disbelief in Him and your branding His Messenger Muḥammad ﷺ a liar, and your warning that His mighty grip will therefore descend upon you — that is true. So be certain of it, and hasten, before your punishment comes upon you, with repentance and turning back to obedience to Allah and faith in Him and in His Messenger. ( فَلا تَغُرَّنَّكُمُ الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا ) So let not the worldly life delude you — He says: let not that prosperity in this worldly life in which you find yourselves, and your leadership, by which you rule over those weaker than you therein, divert you from following Muḥammad and from faith. ( وَلا يَغُرَّنَّكُمْ بِاللَّهِ الْغَرُورُ ) And let not the deceiver delude you concerning Allah — He says: and let not Satan deceive you concerning Allah, so that he holds out to you vain hopes, and makes you false promises concerning Allah, and incites you to persist in your disbelief in Allah.
As ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His statement ( وَلا يَغُرَّنَّكُمْ بِاللَّهِ الْغَرُورُ ) And let not the deceiver delude you concerning Allah, he said: that is Satan.
