The explanation of His statement, the Exalted: (And if they deny you, then messengers before you were already denied. And to Allah are matters returned.) (4)

He, exalted is His remembrance, says to His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: And if these polytheists (mushrikīn) from your people, who ascribe partners to Allah, deny you, O Muhammad, then let that not grieve you and let it not weigh heavily upon you, for that is the custom of their like among the communities that disbelieved in Allah before them, and who denied the messengers of Allah whom He had sent to them before you. And the polytheists of your people will be no different from them, so that in denying you they follow their way and tread their path. (And to Allah are matters returned) — He, exalted is His remembrance, says: and to Allah is the return of your affair and their affair. He will then send down the punishment upon them, if they do not turn back to obeying Us by following you, acknowledging your prophethood, and accepting that to which you call them of sincere counsel — just as We sent down upon their like among the communities that denied their messengers before you. And He will deliver you and your followers from that — that is Our custom regarding those before you among Our messengers and Our close allies (awliyāʾ).

And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the scholars of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.

    * Mention of who said that:

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, (And if they deny you, then messengers before you were already denied): He consoles His Prophet, as you hear.
