And they will say, "Our Lord, indeed we obeyed our masters and our dignitaries, and they led us astray from the [right] way.

The statement concerning the explanation of His saying, the Exalted: وَقَالُوا رَبَّنَا إِنَّا أَطَعْنَا سَادَتَنَا وَكُبَرَاءَنَا فَأَضَلُّونَا السَّبِيلَا (And they will say: "Our Lord, we obeyed our masters and our great ones, and they led us astray from the way") (33:67).
He, exalted is His mention, says: And the unbelievers (kāfir) will say on the Day of Resurrection in Hell (jahannam): "Our Lord, we obeyed our leaders in error, and our great ones in ascribing partners to Allah (shirk)." فَأَضَلُّونَا السَّبِيلَا (and they led us astray from the way) — He says: and they caused us to deviate from the path of truth and the way of guidance, and from belief in You, and from the acknowledgment of Your oneness, and from devoting obedience purely to You in the life of this world.
