(Our Lord, give them double the punishment). He says: punish them with a punishment that is double the punishment with which You punish us. وَالْعَنْهُمْ لَعْنًا كَبِيرًا (and curse them with a great cursing). He says: and humiliate them with a great humiliation.

And in accordance with what we have said about this, the commentators have spoken.

    * Mention of who said that:

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement (Our Lord, indeed we obeyed our leaders and our great ones), that is: our chiefs in evil and idolatry (shirk).

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His statement إِنَّا أَطَعْنَا سَادَتَنَا وَكُبَرَاءَنَا (indeed we obeyed our leaders and our great ones). He said: they are the heads of the communities who led them astray. He said: "our leaders" (sādatanā) and "our great ones" (kubarāʾanā) are one and the same. Most of the reciters of the cities read سَادَتَنا (sādatanā, in the singular collective), while it is related from al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī سَادَاتِنا (sādātinā) in the plural. The singular form therein is, according to us, the [correct] reading, because of the consensus of the authoritative proof of the reciters concerning it.

They differed in the reading of His statement لَعْنًا كَبِيرًا (a great cursing). Most of the reciters of the cities read it with the thāʾ: كَثِيرًا (kathīran, abundant), derived from abundance, with the exception of ʿĀṣim, for he read it لَعْنًا كَبِيرًا (kabīran, great), derived from greatness. The reading therein is, according to us, with the thāʾ, because of the consensus of the authoritative proof of the reciters concerning it.
