Tabari

Tafseer of The Romans · Ar-Room · 30:46

And of His signs is that He sends the winds as bringers of good tidings and to let you taste His mercy and so the ships may sail at His command and so you may seek of His bounty, and perhaps you will be grateful.

The statement concerning the interpretation of His word, exalted is He: (30:46) ("And among His signs is that He sends the winds as bearers of good tidings, and that He may let you taste of His mercy, and that the ships may sail by His command, and that you may seek of His bounty, and that you may be grateful").

He, exalted is His remembrance, says: And among His proofs of His oneness (waḥdāniyya), and His arguments against you that He is the god of every thing, is: أنْ يُرْسِلَ الرّياحَ مُبَشِّراتٍ ("that He sends the winds as bearers of good tidings") of the rain and the mercy; وَلِيُذِيقَكُمْ مِنْ رَحْمَتِهِ ("and that He may let you taste of His mercy"). He says: and that He may send down upon you of His mercy, and that is the rain by which He brings the lands to life, and that the ships may sail upon the seas thereby by His command therein; وَلِتَبْتَغُوا مِنْ فَضْلِهِ ("and that you may seek of His bounty"). He says: and that you may seek His provisions and your sustenance which He has distributed among you; وَلَعلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ ("and that you may be grateful"). He says: and that you may thank your Lord for that; He sent these winds as bearers of good tidings.

And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.
