The explanation of the statement of the Exalted: And when the people are afflicted by adversity, they call upon their Lord, turning to Him in repentance. But when He thereafter lets them taste a mercy from Himself, then a group of them ascribes partners to their Lord (30:33).
The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: and when these polytheists (mushrikīn), who set up alongside Allah another god, are struck by adversity, and a calamity, drought, and scarcity befall them, they call upon their Lord. He says: then they devote the profession of oneness (tawḥīd) purely to their Lord, and single Him out with the call and the supplication to Him, and seek help from Him, turning to Him in repentance (munībīna ilayhi), returning to Him in repentance from their shirk and their unbelief (kufr). But when He thereafter lets them taste a mercy, He says: but when their Lord, the Exalted, removes that adversity from them and brings them relief and grants them prosperity, fertility, and abundance, then, a group of them, He says: then a company of them ascribes partners to their Lord. He says: they worship alongside Him the gods and the idols.
