[Or] of those who have divided their religion and become sects, every faction rejoicing in what it has.

And His word: مِنَ الَّذِينَ فَرَّقُوا دِينَهُمْ وَكَانُوا شِيَعًا ("among those who divided their religion and became sects"), He says: and do not be among the polytheists (mushrikīn) who altered their religion, acted in opposition to it, and separated themselves from it. وَكَانُوا شِيَعًا ("and became sects"), He says: and who became parties and sects, like the Jews and the Christians.
And in accordance with what we have said about this, the exegetes of tafsīr (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, [concerning] الَّذِينَ فَرَّقُوا دِينَهُمْ وَكَانُوا شِيَعًا ("those who divided their religion and became sects"): they are the Jews and the Christians.
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word: الَّذِينَ فَرَّقُوا دِينَهُمْ وَكَانُوا شِيَعًا ("those who divided their religion and became sects") to the end of the āya, he said: these are the Jews. If one were to take His word مِنَ الَّذِينَ فَرَّقُوا دِينَهُمْ ("among those who divided their religion") as a new, independent statement separate from His word وَلَا تَكُونُوا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ ("and do not be among the polytheists"), and its meaning were to be: من الذين فرّقوا دينهم وكانوا شيعا ("among those who divided their religion and became sects"), that is, parties, كُلُّ حِزْبٍ بِمَا لَدَيْهِمْ فَرِحُونَ ("each party rejoicing in what it has") — then that would be an interpretation that the wording can bear.
And His word: كُلُّ حِزْبٍ بِمَا لَدَيْهِمْ فَرِحُونَ ("each party rejoicing in what it has"), He says: each group and sect of these who separated themselves from their true religion and introduced the innovations (bidaʿ) that they introduced, بِمَا لَدَيْهِمْ فَرِحُونَ ("rejoicing in what it has"), He says: are rejoicing and glad about the doctrine they cling to, believing that what is correct lies with them and not with others.
