The explanation of the saying of the Exalted: (30:34) (So that they are ungrateful for what We have given them. So enjoy yourselves; you will soon come to know.)

The Exalted, whose praise is sublime, says — while threatening these polytheists (mushrikīn), about whom He reported that, when He removes the affliction from them, they are ungrateful toward Him: so that they are ungrateful for what We have given them. He says: then they suddenly assign associates to their Lord, so that they are ungrateful — that is to say: that they deny the favour which I have bestowed upon them, by removing from them the affliction in which they were, and by replacing that for them with prosperity, abundance, and well-being. And that prosperity and ease is what He — sublime is His praise — has given them, concerning which He said: (بِمَا آتَيْنَاهُمْ).

And His saying: (فَتَمَتَّعُوا) — He says: so enjoy yourselves then, O people, of what We have given you of prosperity and ease in this world. (فَسَوْف تَعْلَمُونَ) — you will soon come to know, when you appear before your Lord, what you will encounter of His punishment (ʿadhāb) and of the enormity of His retribution for your disbelief (kufr) toward Him in this world.

And some have recited: (فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ) with the yāʾ, with the meaning: so that they are ungrateful for what We have given them, and they have already enjoyed — by way of report — so they will soon come to know.
