The discourse on the explanation of His statement: (3:114) (They believe in Allah and the Last Day, and they enjoin the right and forbid the wrong, and they hasten toward good works; and they are among the righteous.)

Abū Jaʿfar said: By His statement, exalted and mighty is He — "they believe in Allah and the Last Day" — He means: they affirm Allah as truthful and believe in the resurrection after death, and they know that Allah will requite them for their deeds; and they are not like the polytheists (mushrikīn) who deny the oneness of Allah, and worship another besides Him, and deny the resurrection after death, and reject the requital for deeds as well as the reward and the punishment.

And His statement "and they enjoin the right" — He says: they enjoin the people to believe in Allah and His Messenger, and to affirm the truthfulness of Muḥammad ﷺ and of what he has brought them. "And they forbid the wrong" — He says: and they forbid the people from disbelief in Allah, and from denying Muḥammad and what he has brought them from Allah. By this He means: that they are not like the Jews and the Christians, who enjoin the people to disbelief and to the denial of Muḥammad in what he has brought them, and who forbid them the good of deeds, which is the affirmation of the truthfulness of Muḥammad in what he has brought them from Allah. "And they hasten toward good works" — He says: and they make haste to perform good works out of fear that these might escape them before death overtakes them.

Then He informed — exalted is His praise — that these, whose characteristic this is among the People of the Book, are among the number of the righteous, for whoever among them was depraved (fāsiq) has called down upon himself the wrath of Allah (ghaḍab Allah) on account of his disbelief in Allah and His signs, and on account of their killing of the prophets without right, and on account of his disobedience to his Lord and his transgression of His limits (ḥudūd).
